Tommy Douglas Campaign for Health Studies at the University of Toronto

“This program has helped me appreciate health not as a mere result of pathogenic biological processes, but as a multi-disciplinary concept, requiring social and political interventions, which I plan to incorporate into my role as a health care professional in Canada and abroad.”

Alina Smirnova
Health Studies graduate,
currently in medical school

Our Program

The Health Studies Program provides a multidisciplinary foundation of social, biomedical & public health sciences, research skills, progressive political science and an activist orientation to form the next generation of Canadians committed to:

preserving and extending public health care,
ending health-reducing inequalities in Canada &
defending the universal human right to well-being

Whether they become physicians, join an international NGO, teach in Northern Ontario or join the campaign against homelessness, our graduates will be a powerful force for social progress, human rights and well-being in Canada and globally.

A Unique Multidisciplinary Program

Health Studies students will learn and discover the social, economic, biomedical and political factors that produce healthy Canadian and global populations

Individual Attention

Students will explore the determinants of health in small, highly interactive classes which offers a stimulating yet critical multidisciplinary approach to Health Studies.

A Strong Focus on Research in Global Communities

Students in the Health Studies Program engage directly with local and global communities through their research. Thanks to our supporters, our students produce papers, reports and documentaries that serve communities in which they perform their research. Thus, Health Studies students make direct contributions to global communities through their studies in our Program.
